Ray passed away 12th March 2017 suddenly and to the shock and sadness of everyone in Birmingham City Council. Ray was very much loved, respected as an incredibly hard working councillor for Perry Barr, a true gentleman who had time and a story for everyone.
A keen jogger he encouraged colleagues to enter marathons, which of course we didn’t, and was always seen out leafleting, campaigning in his shorts in or out of the council. In his first speech as Lord Mayor we heard of his personal tragedy with the loss of his son, personal circumstances, which was to some extent offset by his huge contribution and works done for the city over some 27 years as a city councillor.
Sadly, it was always his dream to retire next year to a cottage he bought and restored but not been able to spend much time at in Crete. May no-one ever say that public life does not have its costs.
A great public servant who always put people and principle before party politics. Very sad day.
