COVID Racism

Hate crime attacks against SEAsians and Chinese peoples have risen by at least 50% in only two years because of the COVID crisis.

Innocent individuals are being targeted and sometimes brutally attacked because of just how they look, although they all have absolutely nothing to do with the COVID outbreak in China some two years ago. Many such attacks are sadly going unreported because of a reluctance to report and also a belief in how it will not change anything.

I have been told numerous occasions of people like myself who are British Born Chinese to “F-off back to China” or “Here comes COVID”.

This is why a number of friends and concerned individuals have established CARG- Campaign Against Racism Group– to work with other concerned groups on supporting efforts to raise the awareness of this issue with political leaders, working with the CPS to support and push for prosecutions at speed, and agencies to better understand the plight of the widder community that are being affected. COVID has fuelled anti-asian racism and xenophobia across the world caused by intolerance, ignorance and hate not helped by President Trump’s use of divisive phraseology such as “Chinese Virus” and “Wuhan Virus”

“The pandemic continues to unleash a tsunami of hate and xenophobia, scapegoating and scare-mongering” and urged governments to “act now to strengthen the immunity of our societies against the virus of hate.”

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. May 8th 2020

Governments, police forces, local councils and the CPS all must redouble their efforts to expand public outreach, promote tolerance and aggressively and swiftly prosecute those who are inflicting racially aggravated COVID related violence towards others to act as a deterrent and reassure the SEAsian Community. CARG and many others stand ready to support these efforts and I hope you will stand with us and share this message.
