The Birmingham Mail reported on the racist abuse routinely directed at British-Chinese people in Birmingham, from casual slurs in the street to outright hostility, and Alex spoke directly and honestly about the experience of a community that has long been expected to stay quiet and get on with it. As one of the most prominent British-Chinese politicians in the country, Alex has consistently used his platform to make visible the discrimination that others in his community face but rarely feel able to report. This piece was an important moment in that work, naming the abuse plainly and refusing to minimise it.
