Birmingham aims to have zero suicides within a decade

The city sets an ambitious mental health target, and Alex backs the push for better support and earlier intervention

Birmingham set out an ambitious public health goal: to reach zero suicides within ten years. The announcement was covered by the Birmingham Mail and reflected growing recognition across the city that mental health must be treated with the same urgency as physical health. As Shadow Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety and Equalities, Alex has long argued that suicide prevention requires proper investment in early intervention, accessible mental health services and a genuine commitment from those in power to tackle the social conditions — poverty, isolation, inequality — that drive people to crisis. This is a target worth fighting for, and one that demands consistent follow-through.
