When Birmingham’s bin strike left streets across the city strewn with uncollected rubbish for weeks on end, residents were rightly furious — and more than 12,000 of them signed a petition demanding a council tax refund for the period during which the service had simply collapsed. Alex was vocal in supporting the principle that residents should not be expected to pay full council tax for a service they were not receiving. The strike exposed deep failures in the way the Labour-controlled council managed its workforce and its basic civic responsibilities — and the petition, covered by ITV Central, showed just how seriously residents were taking it.
