Birmingham Conservatives have called on Birmingham City Council to drop its High Court action over flags attached to street furniture and instead focus taxpayers’ money and council resources on cleaning up the city.
The call follows a High Court hearing on 8 September, where Judge Emma Kelly raised questions about aspects of the council’s evidence and why an urgent interim injunction was being sought when the activity had been taking place for several months. The case has now been adjourned until 30 September, with the council required to provide greater clarity about its evidence.
There is a more positive and proportionate way forward. Birmingham should never be embarrassed by the Union Flag or the Cross of St George. Rather than spending money fighting expensive legal cases, the council should provide appropriate ways for communities to display our national flags, including flying them proudly from public buildings and providing properly erected flagpoles in suitable community spaces.
At a time when residents are dealing with rubbish, fly-tipping, potholes, pressure on public services and rising council tax bills, every pound and every hour of council officer time matters.
The council should stop turning flags into a battle, drop the court case and concentrate its resources on the issues Birmingham residents want addressed — including cleaner streets and better public services.
