Magistrates’ courts need ‘younger, more diverse recruits’

Alex, a serving magistrate and JP, backs the call for a judiciary that actually reflects the communities it serves

The BBC reported on growing calls for magistrates’ courts to recruit younger and more ethnically diverse candidates — and as a serving Magistrate and Justice of the Peace, Alex was well placed to speak to why that matters. The magistracy is one of the most important and least visible pillars of the justice system, handling the vast majority of criminal cases in England and Wales. But it has long been dominated by older, white, middle-class appointees — a reality that undermines public confidence, particularly in communities that already feel overlooked by institutions. Alex’s own journey to becoming a JP is part of the case for change.
