The emotional moment city councillor Alex Yip thought about committing suicide

Alex shares his own mental health story, because he believes no one should suffer in silence, and that includes those in public life

In one of the most personal things he has ever said publicly, Alex revealed to the Birmingham Mail and the BBC that he had reached a point in his life where he thought about taking his own life. He spoke not to seek sympathy, but because he wanted to break the silence around male mental health and show others, particularly those who feel they must appear strong, that it is possible to come through the darkest moments and go on to live a full and purposeful life. It took real courage to say what he said. As a councillor who now carries responsibility for Social Justice and Equalities, Alex believes that lived experience matters and that telling the truth, however uncomfortable, is the first step towards change.
